CONCEPT PAPER of Naga Riverside walk activity
CONCEPT PAPER of Naga Riverside walk activity
(i) Title of the activity: Naga Riverside
walk-introduction of anthropological approach
(ii) Background
Society and Culture with Family Planning, HIV/AIDS
Education and Bicol Culture( SOCS001) covers several topics such as basic concepts of
socilology, family, social structure and its change throughout the semester.
One of area a course instructor emphasis is a methodology of research and
culture.
Naga river changed over decades
because people's life styles had also changed. Narratives of several old
residents of Naga City shared sorrow to look at Naga River which is not anymore
river they could enjoy and appreciate. Economic development and urbanization
dramatically changed the river. For this, advocates are actively addressing
situation. One instance, Ateneo de Naga faculty staffs, Paz Verdades M. Santos and Dennis B. Gonzaga recently
published book -THE NAGA RIVER ART AND CULTURE INITIATIVE MANNUAL FOR K12
TEACHERS through Ateneo de Naga University Press and their activities advocate
importance of diversity of the river and interconnected issues of cleanliness
of riverside.
I believe sociological inquiries will be able to contribute for their advocacy and make residents and students aware of importance of revitalizing river.
(iii) Rational of the activity
This activity is the part of the sociology
subject. Activity requires students to closely observe the life of people who live along the riverside and make a
group observation paper. Observation is one of important skills in the any
field of sociology and anthropology. This activity can provide the venue for
the student to apply the knowledge which they obtain inside the classroom.
This activity aims to meet course objectives of SOCS001 states; 2.cultivate one’s sociological concern and the capacity to understand the interplay of individual and society; 3.develop critical and creative thinking –the capacity for inquiry as to how and why things/events happen; and the capacity to assert if social change is possible.
Each group share what they see, hear, smell, (taste) , sense and consolidate these observation in one Manila paper.
Being the critical of surrounding and phenomena
are skills which student must be cultivated.
(iv) Expected accomplishments
There are three major expected goals; to apply a
method - thin and thick description, to enhance group solidarity, to provide quality
of observation.
(v) Main activities
1) To walk along the riverside
(observation activity)

class is divided into 6 groups. Each cluster goes together and observe if they
